DV8 Urban Street Festival

Sept 11th Day 1

Really sick stuff goin on at DV8 today , some really good Skateboarding, BMX and Inline Skating going on, But by far the highlight of the festival is this Ski / Snowboard ramp they have setup, it's a 125 in-run leading to a 20 foot high quarterpipe covered in 100 ton's of real snow. The skiers (Evan Raps, Mike Atkinson and Toben Sutherland among others) were goin off! The biggest surprize was Toben Sutherland, he cleaned up! While the others were doin Flare's, 540's and Backflips, some with grabs, he was boosting the biggest air (17 feet or so) and landing Misty 5's with grabs. Today was just the qualifying round so I can't wait for tomorrows finals! I didn't have a camera with me today but I'll definatly bring one tomorrow. I saw 2 people from Freeze there today one with video and one with a camera so look for it in the next Freeze. You can also see coverage on TSN on Nov 14th. Well I'll post again after the finals tommorrow to tell you how it ends up, And I'll post pics on my site as soon as I get them.

Sept 12th Day 2

Today I headed out at around 11am this morning to get a good spot at the Quarterpipe for the super cash session where the skiers compete for a 1/2 hour and the skier who lands the sickest trick wins. The jump wasn't as good as yesterday because the snow was startin to melt. Toben Sutherland won, landing the hugest flare I have ever seen. Evan Raps was out of the running after his second jump where he landed a flair on his side and broke his ribs and might have punctured a lung. Toben Sutherland just missed the 1/2 hour limit when he was up and was going to try a double flair. I asked him what the heck a double flair is after the compitition. He told me it is like a regular flare but with an extra front flip in it as you are coming down for the landing! That would of been sick. He is a really cool guy to talk to and he is going to be one of the coaches at High North this year. The jump was really hurtin by the start of the finals so there wasn't any really sick jumps. I didn't hear the official winner but I'm pretty sure Tobin Sutherland cause even though the jump was crap he hucked huge. Mike Akinson probably was second cause he landed some nice 540's and a Flair or two. He tryed a Misty 5 but ended up landing up on the deck so no points for that! (He did slice some snowboarder's arm from that crash though). Well I have some awesome pictures that I will scan in tomorrow so come back and check that out.
